On Monday July 29th REDstack started with the first real activities for constructing its pilot installation at Breezanddijk (Afsluitdijk, The Netherlands). This pilot installationwill enable a research programme of REDstack BV, FujiFilm Europe BV and Wetsus aimed at gaining insight in pre-treatment aspects and energy harvesting with the Reverse Electro Dialysis (RED) technology. The pilot installation will make it possible to measure and analyse this process on a scale of 200 m3/h salt and 200 m3/h fresh surface water. The capacity of this pilot will grow to 50 kW during the research programme. After the pilot period, further scaling up is foreseen. The insights and results of the pilot installation will provide the project Energising deltas with valuable input. The Wadden fund is providing a grant for a new proposal submitted by the Tidal Testing Centre (TTC). TTC developed a new plan for redesigning and extending test facilities in 2 discharge sluices located at Den Oever. Furthermore a pilot for sustainable energy generation using flows for the renovation of the Afsluitdijk is included. Tidal Testing Centre and Tocardo International BV have entered into a partnership for this proposal. TTC has submitted the project and will plan for co-funding from ‘Rijksbijdrageregeling Ambitieagenda Afsluitdijk’ and the Province of North-Holland.
More turbines will be installed in the Afsluitdijk (the Netherlands). Tocardo Tidal Turbines and Tidal Testing Centre have agreed on a long term cooperation of 3-5 years to expand the tidal test facility in the Afsluitdijk with three turbines. The three turbines will be placed in an array. Hans van Breugel, director of Tocardo Tidal Turbines says: ‘’The turbines will give us vital data and experience in turbine arrays. There is no other turbine manufacturer capable of doing this. We can monitor this array in turbulent waters and are able to see how they react to each other.’’ The expansion is made possible by the Wadden fund. Energising deltas The turbine array is part of a bigger project in the Netherlands; Energising deltas. The Afsluitdijk is representative for an energy delta concept and is used as a pilot project for the Energising deltas project. Other resources of renewable energy, such as Blue Energy are also incorporated in the Afsluitdijk. Energising Deltas is a project in which Tocardo, Energy Valley, REDstack, Erasmus University, ECN, Deltares and Tidal Testing Centre are involved.
