Several parties are researching the possibility for constructing a blue energy plant in Katwijk that will generate electricity from mixing salt and fresh water by means of Reverse Electro Dialysis (RED). An agreement for cooperation is signed by Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland, province of Zuid-Holland, municipalities Katwijk and Noordwijk. The Old Rijn, the river that flows into the sea between Katwijk and Noordwijk, is a perfect location for a blue energy plant, because fresh and salt water come together. This new technique is currently only being developed at the Afsluitdijk. The government considers the circular economy as very important. A ‘blue energy’ power plant is a big step in that direction. And researchers underpin the potential of Blue Energy. This method contributes to clean energy and is also an important export product of the Netherlands. Source: Municipality of Katwijk
