On Wednesday the 25th of June, 2014 the Action Group ‘Energy & Water Works’ (EWW) will present itself to Europe, during EU Sustainable Energy Week in Brussels. This Action Group, recently welcomed by the European Commission as a new active partner of the European Innovation Partnership on Water (EIP Water), will organise an interesting open programme from 13.30 to 16.30hrs in the House of the Dutch Provinces Trierstraat 59-61, Brussels.
Included will be presentations of latest developments in EWW-projects, show cases and blue energy networks and forum discussions about the challenge to create crossovers between energy and water with regard to the design of Energising Sustainable Deltas.
The EIP-Water Action Group EWW builds on the partnerships in a triple helix context including the corporate water- en energy sector, top-level research institutes and national & regional governments. The main purpose is to advance the EIP Water headline target with the aim to identify, test, scale up, disseminate and stimulate the uptake of innovative solutions by market and society for 10 major water related challenges by 2020. In doing so the EIP-Water Action Group EWW contributes to the end goals of the EIP-water: Smart, Sustainable Inclusive Growth.
With support of the European Innovation Partnership on Water, the Action Group EWW started its activities this year. Its main goal is to enhance European interest in innovative crossovers between energy and water in the development of policy, markets and knowledge. To achieve that goal the Action Group EWW will organize several international conferences and workshops where the knowledge and experience of the EWW projects will be shared and where the EWW Action Group partners will address common innovation bottlenecks, barriers and issues relating to the governance of innovation.
During the seminar on the 25th of June, a number of project leaders will share their knowledge and experiences, coming to light in every phase of the innovation cycle (research, development, market, exports). They will address the challenges on how to overcome the issues of governance of innovation.

Hans van Breugel, CEO Tocardo, Chair of the Action Group Energy & Water works
Hans van Breugel is an entrepreneur with extensive experience in the development of renewable energy and sustainable housing projects. He is one of the founders of Tocardo. His background is in ocean tugboats and heavy lift vessels. Van Breugel has sailed as a first officer and also worked for many years in the offshore oil and gas industry. The Tocardo concept was developed by Teamwork Technology, an incubator for renewable concepts such as energy, transport and housing. The offshore experience and knowledge within the company resulted in the installation of the first Tocardo test turbine in 2005, followed by the installation of a commercial turbine in 2008. Hans will share with you the results of the Start-UP-meeting of the EIP-Water ActionGroup EWW: strategies to deal with Valley–of Death problem.
Rik Siebers CEO REDstack The Blue Energy pilot, showcase Afsluitdijk
Rik Siebers is the CEO of REDstack BV, founded in 2005. He promoted in technical science at the TU Delft and has been a director at the Oranjewoud Engineering Agency. He also had several functions at the Chamber of Commerce and VNO-NCW Noord and was one of the founding members of Sustainable Water Technology (now called Wetsus). REDstack and Fujifilm have built a pilot plant to generate 50kW by using Reverse Electro Dialysis (RED) technology. The infrastructure and building for the worlds first pilot on RED driven power generation have been completed at the Afsluitdijk in the Netherlands. First test trials started in February 2014.
Zjev Ambagts (Province of Zuid-Holland) EWW-Project Pro-Tide: Finding powerful solutions
Zjev Ambagts is senior project leader at the province of Zuid-Holland. He is involved in several innovative projects working on integral development of Coast and Deltas. The Building with nature- project, building the SandMotor and two EWW – Projects: Pro tide and the Tidal Power Plant the Brouwersdam. He is going to tell us more about the Pro-tide project, which is about the estuaries, coastal zones and rivers being powerful assets for Europe. Five dynamic partners from Belgium, The Netherlands, The UK and France have teamed up to harness the phenomenal tidal power potential. With the help of European Regional Development Funding through Interreg IV B, tidal energy will soon be a force to be reckoned with. Is it possible to create energy from water in low dynamic areas? Can innovative technologies turn our waterways into commercial energy sources?
