A full page of the daily evening newspaper NRC Handelsblad on Saturday 28 March is devoted to blue energy. The article with the titel “Waterstroom” (electricity by water) explains the concept of generating electricity by mixing salt and fresh water. Rik Siebers (director of REDstack) and Jan Post (researcher at Wetsus/Water Campus Leeuwarden), Kitty Niimeijer (Professor at University Twente) and David Vermaas (PhD on blue energy at University Twente).
At the Afsluitdijk there is a pilot plant of REDstack BV for blue energy. Director Rik Siebers: “Every hour we pump up 200,000 liters of salt water from the Wadden Sea to transport it via pipeline above the highway to our plant. It is mixed with 200,000 gallons of fresh water from the IJsselmeer. Brackish water is fed back through a pipeline across the highway to the Wadden Sea. ”
